Known as the Gateway to the Goyt Valley, Whalley Bridge is an attractive small town in the High Peak, an area of outstanding natural beauty which is a magnet for walkers, climber and tourists and the perfect place for choosing from one of the self caterng holiday cottages on offer. The town stands at the end of the Peak Forest Canal, which cuts through the narrow valley parallel to the main road and railway. Many visitors to the area come for the attraction that the canals bring and there is a thriving barge-restaurant base at the canal head. The parish church of St James, Taxal stands on a site a mile from the town centre and was established in the twelfth century. Parts of the tower may date back to that time, although much of the church was rebuilt in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.
